Knowing literally nothing about hair, much less cutting, color, and styling, I enrolled in the 91成人. I was terrified going back to school, at 36 years old. I sat in the front row with my pen and paper out ready to learn as much as I could.
I decided to put my best foot forward and really work hard at beginning a new career. I had worked for Trader Joe鈥檚 for the last 10 years, and though I loved it, I was ready for something new.
On the side, for the last 8 years, I worked as a professional makeup artist and costume designer. Though the idea of being an artist was a romantic one, I had conceded to the idea that I would need a 鈥渞eal鈥 job to make ends meet.
Educator Kevin helps hold a baby while students around him work at SF Earth Day 2013
To my surprise, Kevin Blackwell called my bluff. He was my intro instructor, and I don鈥檛 think I could have been luckier to have him as my first impression to the world of cosmetology. He was professional, fun, had a genuine passion for the industry, and above all successful.
After the third day I realized that cosmetology was an art, and living the life of an artist didn鈥檛 mean being poor, angry, and disenfranchised; like I thought for years. And the art I was going to learn to do was going to walk down the street everyday!
Once I allowed myself to have fear and acknowledge it and learn from it, I really began to grow in the 91成人. Kevin was the catalyst for my enthusiasm toward the industry and really pushed me to do my best. His guidance, both considerate and straightforward prepared for my time on the salon floor.
Kevin鈥檚 introductory classes have made my experience with guests at the 91成人 rewarding, challenging, professional, and has ensured that I am on a clear path to a rewarding career as a cosmetologist. I am excited to move beyond the 91成人, and taking what I鈥檝e learned from Kevin; I have confidence that my next steps in the industry will be based in preparation and excitement for one of the most rewarding careers I can imagine.
Not many professionals can say that their work is grounded in the concept of making people feel good, I can.
