As a girl, the struggle is real when it comes to making sure you have the necessities when going on a date, or on vacation, or even out with the girls. You have made lists and set reminders to make sure you have absolutely everything you need—or may possibly need. We have all had those moments: “dang why didn’t I bring…” [insert unnecessary item that you know you don’t actually need but have totally convinced yourself that you or your friends will need it].

But there are some things you really must have. First and foremost is mouthwash. You can find mini ones in any grocery store—just go to the travel section and get the travel sizes. You also need some face powder to touch up, gum, lip gloss, bobby pins, two hair ties (someone always asks to borrow a hair tie, it’s good to have an extra), safety pins (in case of a wardrobe malfunction), tampons, mascara, and a backup phone charger.

It’s pretty amazing what you can fit into a clutch or small bag. Knowing you already have what you may need is going to help ease the anxiety of having to go somewhere.

You can also get these emergency kits at stores such as Forever 21, TJ Maxx, or the Beauty Supply Store, but it’s super affordable to just create them yourself! Who doesn’t love shopping for themselves? It could even make for a fun girls’ night, or even party favors for a bachelorette party.

Light Therapy /blog/light-therapy/ Wed, 27 Dec 2017 15:00:21 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2963 Light Therapy Product

Light therapy, or LED therapy, comes with many benefits for the skin and are great additions to skin care regimens. LED therapy uses light energy to penetrate through to the deeper layers of the skin. It stimulates collagen production, boosts cellular metabolism, and can speed up cell repair.

There are different colored lights, each with their own specific function for the skin:

  • Red light therapy is great for treating both acne and wrinkles. It stimulates the fibroblasts to produce more collagen, which, in turn, plumps up the skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. It also reduces inflammation, boosts circulation in the skin, and controls sebum production.
  • Blue light therapy is used specifically for acne. The wavelengths of blue light kill the main acne-causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes.
  • Green light therapy is used to treat hyperpigmentation by reducing the overproduction of melanin.
  • Amber light therapy is used to treat redness and dilated capillaries but doesn’t penetrate as deep as the other colors, so is best if used in conjunction with other LED light colors.

The different LED colors can be used together in one treatment to treat multiple skin issues. They are, of course, best when used in conjunction with serums and creams to further treat the skin.

You can get light therapy treatment done at a spa, a dermatologist’s office, or through a personal handheld device to use at home. The LEDs on a personal device don’t tend to be as strong as those used professionally but are a more affordable option for more than occasional use.

Ultrasound Technology for Skin /blog/ultrasound-technology-for-skin/ Wed, 20 Sep 2017 14:00:22 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2895 Woman Receiving Ultrasonic FacialThere’s an amazing technology that any beauty therapist or Esthetician should be familiar with—ultrasound. If you’ve ever seen a pregnancy ultrasound, you’ve seen images created by sound and vibrations. In the spa world, ultrasound is primarily used to penetrate products into the skin.
The skin’s outermost layer—the stratum corneum—is waterproof and makes it hard to penetrate water-based products or nutrients into the skin. Some argue that lotions and serums can’t be penetrated beyond the first few keratinized layers of the epidermis. But an ultrasound machine can penetrate products deep into the skin, helping with a host of skin problems including dehydrated, damaged, mature, photo-aged, and acneic skin.
This machine uses extremely fast vibrations to penetrate serums, lotions, and creams for optimum skin health. Unlike older galvanic machines used to penetrate the skin, ultrasound is not painful or scary. In fact, you can barely feel the machine going to work. This newer technology works with more than just water soluble ampoules and serums. It can also help penetrate oil soluble products into the skin.
There are currently many other uses for ultrasound in the beauty industry. It’s used for anti-cellulite treatments to burn fat, and can dramatically reduce the appearance of scars.
If you are looking to incorporate machines into your esthetics practice, this is an amazing choice. It will keep your clientele very pleased and help them glow!

Psoriasis and High Frequency Electrotherapy /blog/psoriasis-and-high-frequency-electrotherapy/ Wed, 26 Oct 2016 14:00:12 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2660 High Frequency Electrotherapy MachinePsoriasis is a very common chronic skin disorder. It causes skin cells to reproduce too quickly resulting in thick, dry, scaly patches that can be red, white, or almost silver in color. These patches are itchy and can be painful, but most of all, they can be embarrassing for the person affected.
I have suffered with psoriasis on my scalp and neck for a few years now, and I’ve tried many different treatments including creams and ointments both over the counter and prescribed by physicians. The results have always been the same. They help for a while and then, in a few weeks, the symptoms and my embarrassment return.
Recently, I’ve started a new treatment. It is called High Frequency Electrotherapy which uses an electric current to stimulate the surface of the scalp and local blood circulation, improve the process of nourishment, stimulate local glandular activity, and supply heat to sooth the nervous system of the scalp. These benefits all help decrease the irritation and symptoms of psoriasis.
I’ve personally been doing a high frequency treatment for 10 minutes three days a week for the past three weeks. I’ve seen a significant reduction in my symptoms—enough that I’m finally comfortable wearing my hair in a ponytail which I have not done in years! I highly recommend high frequency treatments for anyone with psoriasis. It’s been a life changer for me.

The Benefits of Microdermabrasion /blog/the-benefits-of-microdermabrasion/ Wed, 08 Jun 2016 14:00:15 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2561 Female model with exfoliated skin.

If you’ve never heard of Microdermabrasion, it is an amazing machine that can help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, increase the production of collagen and elastin, smooth out and retexture the skin, and help to diminish sun spots, scarring, and other discolorations. This machine creates a mechanical exfoliation using small crystals as well as vacuum suction. The vacuum sucks the skin up while the crystals work to exfoliate dead skin cells and imperfections.

Exfoliation is important for all skin types, including the most healthy of skins, to ensure the process of cell turnover. As we age, the rate of our cell turnover—or the amount of time it takes new skin cells to reach the surface and replace the old, dead ones—becomes slower and slower. For this reason, we all need a little help with desquamating the old skin cells. Microdermabrasion is an excellent way to slough off those dead skin cells to reveal a more polished and lively skin tone.

Another benefit of this treatment, in comparison to other forms of deeper exfoliation such as chemical peels, is that there is relatively no downtime. You can leave the spa the same day with a glowing and fresh complexion.

These treatments can be done alone, or in conjunction to an anti-aging, skin brightening, or deep cleansing facial. It is also extremely beneficial when compared with a gentle peel, to really stimulate cell turnover, as well as to decrease pigmentation and sun damage. In addition, for desirable results, it is necessary to have more than one treatment. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment, requiring anywhere from two to twelve treatments to see the desired change in your skin.

Check out your local spa scene to see which spas offers this amazing service.

There are a few things to consider to make sure your treatment goes off without a hitch:

  • Make sure your treatment is followed up with some kind of hydrating product. For full facials, a nice hydrating mask is perfect following microdermabrasion, as exfoliated skin can drink up all the nutrients of the mask. For shorter services, a hydrating serum or rich moisturizer can do the trick.
  • It is also crucial that a good sunscreen be applied following your service, as exfoliated skin is more susceptible to sun damage. Aim for at least an SPF of 30, but SPF 50 is ideal.
  • Furthermore, as one of the goals of this treatment is to help to reduce sun damage, it might be a good idea to avoid prolonged time in the sun for a few days.

The Perfect Blowout /blog/the-perfect-blowout/ Wed, 06 Apr 2016 14:00:11 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2511 Blonde Female ModelDuring my education at the 91łÉČË, I have been assisting at the Zindagi Salon on Grant Street. Absorbing as much as I could in a real-life professional salon, I was able to perfect my skills in shampoo and style. It matters what tools you are using and, as a stylist, it is important to invest in the right tools. Although it may be pricey to have the perfect arsenal while in school, saving up and acquiring sturdy tools will help you save in the long-run, as cheaper tools, non-specific for hairstylists, will break or deteriorate faster. More expensive tools will produce better results and last you longer. The saying is true in this case: You get what you pay for. Be savvy and shop around; you can find discounts if you look hard enough.
Personally, I enjoy using the ceramic round brush, specific for volume and shine. My guests so far have all enjoyed having voluminous “Texas Hair”. This calls for the Aveda Pure Abundance line, which comes as both shampoo and conditioner to create grit and texture, allowing the hair to be more full. I like to be generous with the volumizing tonic, it’s my go-to for every style. It’s a sweet-scented spray, heat-activated, and helps the root elevate creating a nice 60’s beehive look reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. I like to keep the crown last, and when working on the section, spritz the tonic at the root of the hair again after blow drying the rest of the head. Then I divide the crown into sections small enough and narrow enough to fit my brush, then blow dry upwards making sure the root gets blasted with heat. I make sure to have a nozzle on; that concentrates the heat to flow directly onto where I’m concentrating to create volume. Hair has a memory, when you wet the hair and dry it into a certain shape, this shape will stay until you wet the hair again, so blow drying upwards will coax the hair at the crown into feeling and looking fuller. Pin these sections into curls as if you had hot rollers with small clamp clips. Pin at the root. Finish off the crown and let cool dry, then take those curls out, and spray them with some Air Control hairspray to maintain this style during the day.
There you have it! My perfect blow-out for any day of the week and any occasion.

How to Create Boho Curls /blog/how-to-create-boho-curls/ Wed, 19 Aug 2015 14:00:58 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2286 The point of Boho curls is to accomplish a style that looks very lived-in rather messy. Surprisingly, achieving a lived-in look requires a fair amount of work!
First, prep your hair with the products and tools listed above. After drying your hair completely, section your hair and prepare to curl it with your hot tool of choice.
If you’re using a Marcel Iron/Wand:
I would suggest wrapping your hair around the barrel, as you would with a wand. Alternate the directions you curl the hair to add a more natural look.
If you’re using a flat iron:
I would suggest using a wand or a Marcel iron. Flat iron curls take a lot of patience and practice. However, if you insist on using one, use it as follows:
After you’ve curled your entire head, let your curls cool. Set them with some hair spray and then lightly brush through the curls.
Finish your style with a little sea salt spray, if you’ve got some, and off you go! Below are some great tools for prepping your hair:
* Aveda Pure Abundance Style PrepKJDU22cDFW183QQ3WoUMMLQX7Hm15Z1MwNZRpZt6xdM
* Aveda Phomollient
* Blow Dryer
* Round Brush
Tools needed for styling your hair:
* A hot tool used for curl forming, such as:
* Marcel Iron
* Flat Iron
* Curling Wand
* Sea Salt Spray (optional)

4 Things to Look for When Shopping for the Perfect Flat Iron /blog/4-things-to-look-for-when-shopping-for-the-perfect-flat-iron/ Fri, 19 Jun 2015 14:00:04 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2230 Buying a flat iron is not as easy as it may sound-especially when they come in all shapes and sizes and price ranges. So how do you know what to look for when shopping for one? I have listed some of the things you want to look for when shopping for a flat iron:
1) First check if the the plates are ceramic. Ceramic irons are less damaging to the hair and will help control frizz.
2) If you hair is really curly, you want look for narrow plates. The narrow plates will help you reach the difficult spots like around the hair lines, and closer to the scalp. The most common size is a 1-inch, which will get you as close as possible.
3) You also want to look for a flat iron with temperature control. Since not all the hair is the same, not all hair needs the highest temperature of heat to straighten. For fine hair, you want to start with a lower temperature, and for thicker and coarse hair you can go to a higher temp. But you need to find a flat iron that will allow you to control the temperature.
4) One more perk I like in a flat iron, is a turn-off timer. If you are the type of person that is always rushing out the door, make sure you find a flat iron that will automatically turn off when it is not in use for a certain amount of time.
Finding a good flat iron is tough and usually an investment, so make sure you research the ones available on the market to find your perfect flat iron.

High Frequency /blog/high-frequency-4/ Fri, 10 Apr 2015 14:00:25 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2064 High Frequency Machine

High Frequency Machine

I have recently been using the high frequency machine on my face and have become obsessed. The results I’m getting are fantastic! My skin has improved drastically from just a couple of treatments. I can see the breakouts on my face disappearing and my fine lines getting smoother and less visible.

The high frequency machine is used to help:

  • stubborn acne
  • shrink enlarged pores
  • reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and cellulite
  • decongest puffy eyes
  • fade dark eye circles
  • rejuvenate the condition of the scalp for improved hair growth

High frequency is considered an essential skin rejuvenating treatment in the skin care industry. It stimulates cell renewal and assists with improved skin care product penetration and absorption by gently warming the tissues of the skin.

High frequency facial machines work in conjunction with high frequency electrodes which are made of clear tempered glass. The electrodes come in a variety different shapes and sizes to facilitate the treatment of various contours of the face and body. A mild low level alternating electrical current is generated by the high frequency machine which then passes through the attached glass electrode upon contact with the skin. The electrical current ignites the gas inside the electrode and healing electrical light energy is produced. When mixed with the air outside of the electrode, the electrical current creates and infuses the skin with purifying and rejuvenating oxygen molecules and a therapeutic zapping or tingling sensation is experienced.

The benefits are amazing and I would highly suggest getting a high frequency facial.

High Frequency /blog/high-frequency-2/ Tue, 03 Feb 2015 15:00:37 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=1740 During CIDESCO, I’ve gotten to work with and learn about a lot of different machines. Out of all of them, I would have to say my favorite is the High Frequency machine.
I’ve suffered with breakouts since puberty. I wish I had known about this machine a long time ago, as it is excellent for oily and acne-prone skin. The machine is designed to produce heat in targeted skin tissues. The high frequency machine has been proven to eliminate toxins and acne causing bacteria, exfoliate dead skin cells, enhance blood circulation, increase collagen and elastin production, and overall help rejuvenate your skin. For my acne-prone skin, it has been great because of the germicidal effect it has on the acne bacteria.
Since I became an esthetician, my skin has made huge improvements. I’ve learned about different ways to care for my skin, and I’ve been able to use the high frequency machine. It is a great tool to incorporate in your facials, especially for someone suffering with breakouts. I like to use it after extractions to really help kill the bacteria while your pores are open.
I know someone at school who has eczema too, and she uses the high frequency on the spots that are bothering her. It really helps to diminish the problem. It is definitely one of the easier machines to use, which is good because your client can purchase one for themselves and use it at home.
The High Frequency machine is my favorite. I’ve seen first hand how it can do wonders for your skin.
