Exploring Job Duties and Possible Career Paths /blog/what-does-an-esthetician-do-exploring-job-duties-and-possible-career-paths/ Mon, 04 Apr 2022 14:14:00 +0000 /?p=4157 A woman receives a beauty mask treatment from an esthetician

Curious about becoming an esthetician but unsure what the job entails? This career path is rewarding and exciting, but it also requires esthetics training and learning. To help you better understand this industry, 91成人, a beauty school in Northern California, highlights some of the duties of an esthetician.

What Does It Mean to Be an Esthetician?

If you are interested in a career as an esthetician, you must first understand what the title means. Estheticians specialize in the cosmetology aspect of skincare instead of the medical component. They mostly perform cosmetic skin evaluations and care.

You typically will find an esthetician working in a salon or a spa. Some estheticians also work in medical skincare clinics alongside dermatologists. These workers provide patients with cosmetic skin treatments following the doctor鈥檚 dermatology examination and diagnosis. Although these estheticians work with dermatologists, they cannot prescribe medication or diagnose skin conditions. Instead, they can apply and recommend over-the-counter (OTC) products such as masks, creams, and serums that work best with the clients鈥 specific skin type.

Services Offered by Estheticians

Estheticians perform various services, and many specialize in a specific aspect of skincare. For example, some individually-owned spas feature estheticians who focus on facials or waxing. However, most people who undergo training and certification to become an esthetician can provide the following skin care services:

  • Extractions: Estheticians can remove imperfections and blemishes such as blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples from the skin. This process can make an imperfection immediately improve or disappear.
  • Facials: After evaluating a client鈥檚 skin type, the esthetician performs a facial tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual鈥檚 skin and problem areas. Most facials include a deep cleansing of the skin, steaming, exfoliation treatment, face mask application, moisturizer, and serum.
  • Chemical peels: Estheticians provide superficial chemical peels using a form of alpha hydroxy acid to quickly exfoliate the skin, leaving a healthy glow and anti-aging benefits.
  • Acne treatment: An esthetician can assess the skin and recommend OTC treatments for mild acne concerns that do not require medical treatment. Sometimes they also suggest or perform a specific facial, peel, or extraction at the spa.
  • Hair removal and waxing: Estheticians are equipped and trained to remove unwanted hair on the body, such as the back, chest, face, bikini area, and between the eyebrows. They use various hair removal methods to remove hair, including waxing, tweezing, laser hair removal, and threading.
  • Tanning: Some estheticians offer airbrush tanning, a skin-friendly alternative to tanning beds. This process involves spraying the skin with an ultra-fine tanning mist that quickly dries and adheres to the skin, leaving a sun-kissed glow.
  • Body skincare scrubs and masks: Aside from treating the skin on your face, estheticians also can apply different scrubs, masks, and wraps that benefit the skin all over the body. Frequently used solutions include salt and sugar scrubs to exfoliate the skin on the body and seaweed or clay body wraps to give the skin a glowing and firming effect.

As an esthetician, you can choose which areas of service you enjoy most and are most comfortable performing to help build up your area of specialty. Many estheticians have one or two specialty areas but can conduct other skincare treatments as well. By receiving the proper training at an esthetician school, you are fully equipped with the skills to perform all the essential services.

Potential Career Paths for Estheticians

The skills estheticians garner from their education enable them to pursue multiple careers in the beauty industry. Besides working in a salon, spa, or healthcare facility, estheticians can pursue other work:

  • Retail make-up salesperson
  • Make-up artist
  • Esthetics instructor
  • Beauty brand representative
  • licensing examiner
  • Beauty magazine editor

Safe Manicures and Pedicures /blog/safe-manicures-and-pedicures/ Wed, 11 Mar 2020 14:00:46 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=3511 Gel Manicure

In the age of corona virus, we all have to be concerned about whether our nail salon follows all the safety procedures they should. The average person wouldn鈥檛 necessarily know how to spot unsafe procedures at a nail salon, so I have rounded up a list of things to look for next time you鈥檙e itching to get a manicure or pedicure.

  1. Washing of Hands

Both you and your nail technician should wash your hands before beginning a service. This gets your service off to a clean and germ free start. If you fail to see your technician wash their hands before beginning your service, you may kindly ask them to.

  2. Know Which Implements are Disposable and Which Can Be Reused and Disinfected

You should be able to observe reusable implements such a nail clipper and cuticle pushers being soaked in a disinfectant. Disposable implements such as buffers, nail files, and manicure sticks should be thrown away after use. You can also request that new files and buffers be opened in front of you so you can ensure they have not been previously used.

  3. Beware of Illegal Tools

Tools that have razor edges used to remove calluses are illegal and unsanitary. Your nail technician should never perform any services that affect the structure or function of living tissue.

  4. Documentation

Your nail technician鈥檚 license should be visible to you. It must not be expired.

  5. Proper Disinfectant for Pedicure Baths

The EPA requires that all pedicure baths be sanitized with EPA registered hospital disinfectant. You should be able to observe the words 鈥淗ospital鈥 or 鈥淢edical鈥 in the labeling.

If done properly and safely, few things are a relaxing and indulgent as getting a great manicure and/or pedicure.

Why is Vitamin C Important? /blog/why-is-vitamin-c-important/ Wed, 21 Nov 2018 15:00:16 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=3184 Orange and Vitamin C

Time and again, we hear beauty experts praise vitamin C. You probably know that it prevents scurvy鈥攖he disease that afflicted sailors on long sea voyages without sources of vitamin C鈥攁nd you might have heard Linus Pauling鈥檚 controversial theory that it helps prevent the common cold. There鈥檚 only one catch though鈥攜our body doesn鈥檛 store or accumulate it. That鈥檚 why daily intake is important.

But why do beauty experts feel it is so important for your skin, hair, and nails? Here are some of vitamin C鈥檚 beauty benefits:

Skin Benefits

Vitamin C is responsible for creating and maintaining collagen. Specifically, this antioxidant strengthens blood vessels and helps give skin its elasticity. For a vitamin C-rich face mask, blend one kiwi and a half-cup of papaya, and apply the mixture to your face for about five minutes.

Hair Health

Vitamin C works to help grow and strengthen hair. To do so, blend a partially-boiled sweet potato, a half-cup of gooseberries, a few strawberries, and half of a small red bell pepper until you get a creamy smooth mixture. Then apply it to your scalp and hair. Leave the mask on for 15 to 25 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.

Nail Health

Because vitamin C strengthens nails and helps them grow, it can help prevent hangnails. Ingesting vitamin C is the best route for nail health, so remember, since your body doesn鈥檛 store vitamin C, you have to eat citrus fruits often.

Nail Maintenance /blog/nail-maintenance/ Wed, 06 Sep 2017 14:00:45 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2883 Biting Nails

Do you have a really bad habit of biting your nails? Does your manicurist go on and on about how damaged they are and how you need to take better care of them? Well, I feel your pain. I struggled with biting my nails and suffered from chipped dry nails and cuticles for years. It wasn’t until recently that I have taken better care of them.

For me, biting my nails was a way of dealing with stress and anxiety. It was easier to chew my nails down to the nub rather than to deal with my issues and nerves. It took a long time to beat my nasty habit of chewing them. I found a new way to deal with my stress through watching movies and spending more time with my friends. After spending time to rehabilitate my nails, I have found time to take better care of my nails, including trimming and filing.

There are plenty of ways to take care of your nail beds and cuticles to keep them healthy, strong, and looking nice. Here are five tips:

  1. Get a manicure: I know it’s a shock, but it’s important to have weekly nail maintenance to keep your nails strong and healthy.
  2. Wear gloves: When washing dishes, or being exposed to really cold temperatures, it is important to wear gloves to avoid having your nails become brittle. Then they will not chip as easily.
  3. Wear sunscreen: When getting your nails done, it is important to wear sunscreen on your hands and nails to avoid the LED light most salons use from internally damaging your skin and nails.
  4. Diet: adjust your diet to healthier foods, such as vegetables, fish (like salmon), and protein. These types of foods really help strengthen the nail and make your nails grow faster.
  5. Coating: always wear both a base coat and a top coat. Never skip one or the other. This process will help strengthen your nails and reduces the amount of chipping.

Removing Gel Manicures /blog/removing-gel-manicures/ Wed, 26 Apr 2017 14:00:36 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=2787 Gel Manicure

When I first started getting gel manicures regularly, I thought I鈥檇 discovered heaven. A manicure that actually stayed for two weeks? No way! But after time, my nails started to get so paper thin underneath that I was forced to stop getting them done all together. Now, I give my nails some time to breath between manicures and get gel manicures done way less frequently.

I am not always the most patient when it comes to getting the gel manicures taken off however. I鈥檝e found that removing them the wrong way can leave your poor nails in a world of hurt. Follow these steps to remove your gel manicure as painlessly as possible:

First, get your hands on a nail file, the grittier, the better. Start by buffing off the top gel layer, leaving the nail feeling matte and gritty.

Next, soak a cotton ball in a generous amount of acetone. Place it squarely on the fingernail, as tight as you can against the nail. Do the whole hand鈥檚 worth of nails and, if you鈥檙e able, your other hand as well.

After about 30 minutes, you should notice some flakes beginning to shed off of your nails. Push the polish off your nailbed horizontally and gently. Instead of digging into the nail on those stubborn spots, douse cotton balls in more acetone and continue to soak the nail until it comes off gently.

The healthier your nails are, the better your results are going to be with this process. And definitely do not peel the gel off of your nails. It鈥檚 tempting, but you鈥檒l just make more problems for your nails in the long run.

Winter Nail Trends /blog/winter-nail-trends/ Wed, 25 Feb 2015 15:00:27 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=1849 Fingernails with Nail Tape

During winter, everything is gray damp and can be bleak. One way I love to brighten up my winter is with new nail trends. Here are a few of my favorites.

  • Gray Nails—Gray nails compliment every skin tone and are neutral so they go with every look. Some of my favorite gray polishes are Forever 21’s overcast skies polish, which is a light matte gray; RGB Steel, which is a darker gray; and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Grease Lightning.
  • Pop Culture Nail Decals—These are my favorites. You can find so many quality nail decals on Etsy for under ten dollars and they liven up any plain manicure. Some of my favorite include crying Kim Kardasian, Anne Boelynn, Frida Kahlo, Marie Antoinette (both pre—and post-beheading), and Justin Timberlake through the 2000s.
  • Nail Tape—One of the simplest nail art looks to do yourself is nail tape. The tape comes in either matte or shiny and in many different colors. You simply paint your nails, let them dry, then cut and apply the tape in whatever pattern you desire: from stripes to plaid. You can even apply the tape as a colored french tip.

Four Ways to Dry Your Nails /blog/four-ways-to-dry-your-nails/ Sat, 24 Jan 2015 15:00:27 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=1706 One of the most frustrating parts of getting your nails done is thinking you have allowed enough time for them to dry, running out the door, getting in your car, only to find that you have smudged what moments ago was a beautiful manicure. It takes time and patience to sit in the salon after your nails are done waiting while your polish dries, and this is when times seems to pass incredibly slowly. Usually you decide to leave when your patience runs out, not when your nails are thoroughly dry. Here are four great tips to help nail polish dry faster:

  • Super cold water: Before you start painting your nails, fill a small bowl up with ice cubes and cold water. Once nails are painted, dip your hands into the bowl of freezing water. This will help set the polish. If you are at a nail salon and do not have access to ice cubes, just place your hands under cold water for about a minute.
  • Cold air: Your hairdryer works just as well as a salon’s nail dryer. All you have to do is set your hair dryer to the cool setting and blast your freshly painted nails with cold air.
  • Spray: Nail drying sprays work extremely well. They are not hard to find and can be purchased at your local drug store. But what works just as well is any type of cooking oil spray such as PAM—yes PAM! Just be sure that you wash your hands a few minutes after you spray your hands with it.
  • Thinner the better: Try doing three thin coats of polish rather than two thicker coats. Make sure you wait a few minutes in between coats. This allows the polish to dry evenly and faster.

A Chip-free Manicure that Lasts /blog/a-chip-free-manicure-that-lasts/ Mon, 22 Dec 2014 15:00:16 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=1570 Even though gel manicures are becoming the new norm, many of us girls still prefer the basic manicure with all its flexibility. I like to be able to change my polish color more often than once every two to three weeks. Chips are inevitable. But with a basic non gel manicure, together with these tips, chips are more manageable.

We all know a manicure often won鈥檛 last a full week with our daily routines. Here are a few of my favorite ways to extend the life of my manicure and keep my polish looking fresh.

  • Keep nails short鈥攂y keeping a shorter nail length, you can prevent snags and tears from occurring. Even if you don鈥檛 have beautiful hands, a clean polished short nail can make all the difference.
  • Prep the nail鈥攗sing a product to remove any oils from the nail bed is an essential step before applying polish. Removing all the oils from the nail bed will allow your polish to best adhere and helps ensure your polish doesn鈥檛 chip.
  • Apply a base coat鈥攕ometimes we think we can skip this step, but if you want to keep your nails from discoloring while also keeping the polish in place, a base coat is key. The product I favor is Sticky from CND.
  • Apply a top coat鈥攁 good and fast drying topcoat should always be the final step. This effort will create a sleek and shiny seal for your polish and keep your manicure from chipping. My go to product is Sech Vite.

Always remember that it is important to keep your hands and cuticles hydrated throughout the week. Solar Oil is my favorite all around great oil.

Getting a Manicure /blog/getting-a-manicure/ Fri, 12 Dec 2014 15:00:48 +0000 https://blog.cintaaveda.edu/?p=1324 Most people have gone to a nail salon or spa for a manicure. Some places are better than others. I have a favorite place that I like to go, but what happens when you鈥檙e out of state, or your favorite place is closed? How do you know that you鈥檙e going to get the same level of service that you get at your usual place?
Do you going to Yelp and read reviews? Do you rely on a friend who seems to know what they are talking about? Do you take the time to go online and research the health code scores over the last several years? With all that, even the top places can still give you bad service. So here are a few tips and things that I want from a nail salon.
Manicure Close-up When you first walk into the salon, has anyone greeted you? Look around to see if you can locate a recent health code score鈥攖hey鈥檙e required to be publicly posted. Always make sure that the person doing your nails has a cosmetology or manicuring license. You always want to be sure that any beauty professional performing service for you is properly licensed. Now look to make sure that the place of business is clean in general. Before sitting down for your service, your manicurist should have taken a clean cloth or paper towel and, with a bottle of disinfectant, sprayed and wiped down the nail station. A clean towel should also be put over the nail station as you鈥檙e being seated. It is very important that your manicurist has gotten all the clean, unused supplies from proper packaging. This includes the buffer. Most places try to get away with using the same buffer from client to client, but infection can get spread that way. Relax while the manicurist is performing your nail service, but still pay attention to what he or she is doing. Never let the manicurist cut your cuticles鈥攖hey should just be slightly pushed back.
You鈥檙e almost finished. You鈥檝e got nice, pretty, polished nails and hopefully you鈥檝e received a safe manicure with great service. Have fun and happy nails!

Some ways to keep up with trends are:
